East Fremantle Yacht Club is extremely proud of the work of its dedicated Sail Training team, who provide a choice of recommended pathways for people who are just starting out on the water or looking to develop their knowledge and skills.

The aim is to deliver a quality sailing and boating experience for a wide variety of ages and experience and to provide a variety of ongoing opportunities matched to an individual’s needs and motivations.

East Fremantle Yacht Club is an accredited Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre, offering courses for all ages, kids to adults, from absolute beginners up to the more experienced. For more information please check out our full range of courses below.

Junior Sailing Courses

This course is designed to a safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing for beginners aged 7 – 12 years. The course includes fundamental  boat handling skills and essential safety knowledge. All Tackers will receive a complete branded ‘Tackers Pack’ including a rash vest, hat, water bottle, insurance and a certificate of completion. This is a Australian Sailing accredited course for girls and boys aged 7 to 12 years. Children are required to be able to swim 25 meters to complete this course.

$140 current junior EFYC members
$200 non-members (includes a kids 19/20 EFYC membership)

Bronze Fleet is designed to be a cost-effective gateway into our Junior Training Squad & racing program. Once successfully completing a Tacker’s 2 or Start Sailing 1 & 2 course you can progress up to our Bronze Fleet.

Bronze Fleet is a fully coached program. The main objective is learning how to sail boats faster & boost confidence on the water. Bronze Fleet is structured to take place on Saturday morning’s coinciding with our Junior Training Squad. Bronze Fleet kids will be able to merge with our existing sailors & experience a taste of sailing different types of boats.

Coaches will identify when junior sailors are ready to progress from Bronze Fleet into the Junior Training Squad. This maybe before or at the end of the seven sessions. Junior Training Squad runs Saturday mornings throughout school terms & is a fully coached program gearing the kids up for club racing on Saturday afternoons.

Improve your skills training is continuously offered on Wednesdays or Fridays after school hours all throughout the year. It is a great way to practice what you have learnt at Sailing School and start understanding sail racing. If you do not have a boat, you can lease one from our Club.

This training is subsidized by 100 Club and EFYC so the costs are minimal for the parents.

OutThere Sailing is the ideal way to have fun and get active on the water whilst:

  • Having fun while experiencing sailing.
  • Socialising with friends and making new ones.
  • Learning how to sail in an inclusive environment.
  • Developing life-long friendships and learning team skills.

The aim of the program is to have fun, spend time with friends and learn new skills. All our youth programs are delivered by qualified Australian Sailing Instructors. Previously known as Start Sailing & Better Sailing this is a new and improved program incorporating sailing, stand-up paddle boarding & power boating.

This program is aimed at 12-17 year old’s who would like to try dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, stand up paddleboarding and powerboating. OutThere Sailing also focuses on the social element of a club environment, simply enjoying time spent with friends whether that be on the water, on the beach or in the clubhouse. The program provides a social environment for teenagers to cultivate real friendships with others from their local area, whilst potentially igniting a love for sailing in the process.

Adult Sailing Courses

Start Crewing / Helming is designed for people with little or no sailing experience, who want to get a taste of sailing, as well as those wanting to take their skills further. Run over 3 days, each day will consist of 1 hour of discussion & practical rope work followed by 3 hours of on-water instruction.

During the on-water instruction each group of 4 participants will be accompanied by an instructor accredited to the National Keelboat Scheme. Each participant will be required to wear life jackets during on water activities. Instructions on correct fit & use will be an early priority on boarding the boat. Strong winds or forecast strong winds (generally in excess of 15 knots) will be reason to cancel the on water activity.

Generally participants will be rotated through different boats & instructors for each on water session to broaden the experience of different types of boats.

The course includes:

  • Sail handling – learn to prepare the sails & rig the boat
  • Learn the correct use of halyards, sheets & deck hardware
  • Reef & shake out sails whilst underway
  • Helm & trim sails effectively on all points of sail
  • Helm effectively around a triangular course including tacking & gybing
  • Recover a man overboard under sail as helm
  • Basic weather forecasts
  • Emergencies & raising the alarm
  • Anchoring the boat

This course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to be a useful crew member on inshore and offshore racing yachts. With the introduction of tactics and rules of racing it is a great way to gain more confidence on the race track.

The Adult Dinghy course is designed to provide a safe & enjoyable introduction to small boat sailing for novices 18 years & older. This course will provide participants with a wide range of skills, a sound understanding of the responsibilities of the helmsman & crew, & knowledge of the marine environment.

Power Boating Courses

COURSE DETAILS

The course consists of a Theory and Practical component.

Theory Session

Will take place on a weekday during the evening at EFYC. Will start at 6pm  and will go on until approximately 9pm.

This is a review session followed by the multiple choice theory assessment.  To pass the theory portion of the RST you will need to obtain a mark of 80% or higher.   You will not be able to complete the practical assessment until you successfully pass the theory assessment.
Please note:  This session is designed as a review only and you will need to have a good understanding of the material contained in the RST Workbook before attending.

If you do not yet have a copy of the RST workbook you can download it from the workbook link below, Department of Transport Website or collect  a copy from 1 Essex St, Fremantle.

Please bring to this session:

  • Photo ID.
    If you have a drivers licence with a photo this will both prove who you are and that your eyesight meets the minimum requirement to drive a boat. If you do not have a driver’s license you will need to have an eyesight test completed on an approved form and provide several pieces of alternate identification.  Please give me a call for additional advice if you fall in this category
  • A note book and pen

  • Please also carefully review tasks 5 and 11 (log off and log on) as these will be assessed right away to save time for other parts of the assessment.
