Pelican Report (Nautical News November)
Hi all, my name is Kylie Swallow and I have taken over the position of Pelican representative from Steve Barnden. I would like to thank Steve for all his hard work over the past year and I realise I have very big shoes to fill!
During the winter there was a massive change of the fleet as many sailors progressed to sailing Flying Ants and 125’s.
However, we have a great group of keen young sailors coming through and there will be at least 10 boats in the fleet this year.
The winter series at EFYC enabled many of the new crews to wet their feet and the more experienced also raced at South of Perth Yacht Club in the Solo Winter Series ensuring that the cobwebs were blown away.
Travis Burtenshaw has started coaching and is being ably assisted by Brianna Hoskins and Sanne Koelemij. Travis is passionate about sailing and spent his younger years in Pelicans and is a great asset to our fleet.
Along with the Club Consistency races we have so far had two Club Heats and the Peter Mapstone race.
The first Club Heat was won by Pelilious (Zoe Thomson & Sasha Smail), second Cracker Jack (Jack Swallow & Trent Hoskins) and third Rampage (Adam Brenz-Verca & Ben Wardle).
The Peter Mapstone race was held in very interesting conditions.... wind, rain, no wind, cloudy and cold. It was a long weekend but gave all the crews an idea of the level of racing that will be seen at the States this season in Esperance.
The results of the Peter Mapstone race:
First – Seeking (SoPYC)
Second – Rampage (EFYC)
Third – Pelilious (EFYC)
The following day saw Evie & Connor in UNO, Tabitha & Jordon in Combat and Jack & Trent in Cracker Jack head to SoPYC for another afternoon of sailing. Again, there were many highlights out on the water. What I have enjoyed seeing is the huge improvement in our new Skippers.
What a huge weekend it was Friday night (Raffle night), Saturday morning (sailing training), Saturday afternoon (Peter Mapstone race/Club Heat #2) and finally the first Junior Disco of the season.
The level of support by all the parents, and the great camaraderie amongst the sailors will make this a fantastic season and I am excited to see everyone progress, learn and enjoying their sailing.
